Scheme for Adolescent Girls or SAG is one of the most important initiatives by Government of India under Ministry Women and Child Development. This works towards nutritional assistance for the out-of-school adolescent girls, in order to break the cycle of malnutrition. The scheme is part of the larger mission to ensure health, hygiene and wellbeing among adolescent girls across the country. Some of the objectives — The implementation is done through Anganwadi Centres under Umbrella ICDS Scheme and these efforts are aimed at overcoming challenges faced by girls who have dropped out from formal education to enable them transition back to school, etc. /Girls learn life skills especially relevant in context of women empowerment.

To address that, a program was initiated to provide girls aged 11-18 with necessary nutrition and healthcare. In school helps girls as well. This program gives opportunities for Girls

Objectives

  • The aim is to provide life skills education to out-of-school adolescent girls between the ages of 11 and 18.
  • To Enhance the nutritional and health status by Providing Take Home Rations or hot meals.
  • To Implement health education and IFA supplementation.
  • To Address the need for girls returning back to mainstream education.
  • To Enable access to basic services such as Primary Health Centres and Anganwadi Centres.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Female adolescents aged 11 to 18 years.
  • Out-of-school girls are the primary beneficiaries.
  • Implemented through Anganwadi Centres.

Benefits

  • Nutritional Component: Girls receive 600 calories daily and essential nutrients through Take Home Rations or cooked meals.
  • Non-Nutritional Component: Includes IFA supplementation, health check-ups, and Nutrition and Health Education (NHE).
  • Access to counseling on family welfare, life skills, and public services like Janani Suraksha Yojana.

How to Apply

The application process of the Scheme for Adolescent Girls is offline. Out-of-school girls are identified through the surveys done by the Anganwadi Workers. The Anganwadi workers carried out house to house visits for collecting information and registering eligible girls. The benefits are disbursed through the Anganwadi Centres so ensure that every adolescent girl is supported nutritionally and health wise. The scheme is also in support of other schemes like the Swadhar Greh Scheme and Sukanya Samridh Yojana, targeted towards the adolescent population, empowering them in various spheres.

SAG collaborates with other health programs that address other girls’ issues for holistic development. It also collaborates with programmes like the National Creche Scheme, which envisions providing an environment of development and learning for the adolescent girls and young mothers.

The Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG) is a policy initiated by the government of India to treat and correct the issue of malnutrition for growing females. It does so by concentrating on nutritional and non-nutritional enabling factors to help them live a better and more self-sufficient life. SAG collaborates with the likes of PMMVY and Poshan Tracker schemes.
